BJ's Post 4Q Profit, Sales Climb admist Bad February Weather....

Fourth Quarter:
BJ's Wholesale Club Inc. released their 4Q numbers on Wednesday, finding  that its fiscal fourth-quarter profit climbed 5 percent and higher gasoline prices led to increased revenue.

But the third-largest warehouse club operator also gave a 2010 earnings forecast below analysts' predictions. .
BJ's profit increased to $55.1 million, or $1.01 per share. That compares with earnings of $52.7 million, or 91 cents per share, a year ago

From Chicago Sun Times:
Sales for the period ended Jan. 30 rose 9% to $2.8 billion from $2.56 billion on membership fee growth and increased net sales, beating the $2.79 billion forecast of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.

Sales at stores open at least a year grew 4.6 percent, with a 2.3 percent benefit from gasoline sales. That figure is a key measure of a retailer's performance because it looks at the results of existing stores rather than newly opened ones.

The results are an improvement from the third quarter, when the sales figure fell 2.5 percent.
Earlier in the morning rival Costco Wholesale Corp. reported that its second-quarter profit rose 25 percent as strong overseas sales growth and increased gasoline prices lifted its revenue.

BJ's, based in Natick, Mass., has seen success during the recession as budget-minded shoppers have come to its stores for deals on food and other necessities.

The company's full-year profit slipped 2 percent to $132.1 million, or $2.42 per share, from $134.6 million, or $2.28 per share, in the prior year. Adjusted earnings were $2.48 per share.

Annual revenue increased 2 percent to $10.19 billion from $10.03 billion.

Sales at stores open at least a year fell 1.9 percent, with a 5.9 percent drag from lower overall gas prices. Taking out gas sales, the figure climbed 4 percent for the year.

BJ's forecast a profit between $2.54 and $2.64 for fiscal 2010, but that's short of the $2.71 per share that analysts are looking for. The company anticipates first-quarter earnings in a range of 40 cents to 45 cents per share. Wall Street predicts a quarterly profit of 43 cents per share.

February Sales:

BJ’s Wholesale Club, Inc. (NYSE:BJ): reported that sales for February 2010 increased by 12.8% to $755.2 million from $669.6 million in February 2009. Comparable club sales increased by 7.5% for the month of February 2010, including a contribution from sales of gasoline of 3.6%. Excluding gasoline sales, merchandise comparable club sales increased by 3.9%.  A calendar shift in the timing of the Super Bowl from January last year to February this year had a positive impact on merchandise comparable club sales of approximately 2%. However, severe winter storms had a negative impact of 2-2.5%.

  • Excluding sales of gasoline, traffic increased by approximately 3% and the average transaction amount increased by approximately 1%.
  • Sales of food increased by approximately 7% and general merchandise sales decreased by about 1%.
  • Departments with the strongest sales increases compared to last year included bakery, breakfast foods, cigarettes, computers, dairy, deli, frozen foods, furniture, house wares, juices, produce, small appliances and snacks. Weaker departments versus last year included books, household chemicals, DVDs, televisions and trash bags.

  1. I just have a quick question. Is there any particular reason why Club 013 is getting all Shoprites reject managers? I mean, Rich wasn't the greatest manager of all time, but they decide to replace him with a GM that got canned from Shoprite. A GM by the way who really enjoys sitting in his office all day every day and watching his worker ants through his darkened windows. I just don't get it. Probably never will...

  2. Bring back George Ulsh. He was the best GM 13 ever had.... BJ'S likes to bring in former supermarket managers because of their "experience".... yet those that worked their way up get screwed

  4. Some Managers lead by example, while others are finger pointers. Lead by example Managers motivate employees while finger pointers turn off employees.

  8. i was wondering the same thing...everyone knows cory is the one who makes that club run..imagine if cory gets a club....

    ReplyDelete
  9. if sales are up.. why is budget down?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Cory is young and although great to work for, still can be immature at times. I am sure he will be given his own store to run in due time.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Just remember how long it took Curtis to get his own club ( finally )

    ReplyDelete
  12. Cory and Curtis BOTH started off as ticketers and worked their way up to their current positions. I would agree Cory needs to grow up a little more,. however, he would be a better GM than the current ones running the show.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Maybe Cory can catch the Jumbo Lump Kleptomaniac. Then he'd would get a club next week.

  14. Will my manager see this hmm i wonder i work at club 165 why is the manager of the cash office mother to the girl who runs h.r. and mother to the girl who is the manager of membership

  15. At Club 165 its all favoritism when the manager turns around all hell breaks lose and they dont care like there are people who can take a 15 min. break and turn it into two hours if they promise the fls or mod a cup of coffee or maybe some wendys and that isnt right to people who need breaks is it. Its all gossip and arguments none of the managers or fls like each other all pretend they do. You complain but you know it wont do any good because the fls you complain is going to the manager office at lunch with french fries wohhh!! they hit the cashiers with 2-3 write ups at a time like two months ago you missed an item for 4.99 please sign.....like wtf is that and nearly every cashier is on their last corrective and the ones that are on their last corrective happens to be the ones that dont kiss ass...you stay extra theres no thank you but god forbid you leave ya scheduled time and there is people in the store you get the look of shame. Or if you stay back for them one hundred times and the 101 time you say sorry i cant the mod puts you on a guilt trip and say your not a good worker...club 165 you know what it is stand up and be heard i hope someone see this and investigates this club cause its so bad....

  16. Does anyone know the "standard" starting pay for a cash office clerk/team member? Does anyone do double duty between cashier and cash office and only get paid at the cashier rate? I make less than $8/hour. Thanks!

what can an employee do about internal theft when everyone looks the other way? my meat manager chomps down on cheese, salami, sandwiches, chickens, wings and just about anything open, but threatens to fire anyone else on the spot if they are caught, but then offers them cheese and salami 20 minutes later. the second in command is the same. i've approached countless managers and supervisors with this problem including regionals. but it keeps happening. has anyone succeeded in getting this situation resolved? morale is down through the ground because of these idiotic managers roaming around in the company. help!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Have you spoken with the regional Loss Prevention Manager? As a former LP, that is considered theft, but you need to completely document ALL incidents ( ex: on 4-29-10 @ 10:45 AM, Joe Smith, Meat Manager @ Club # 000 opened a roll of salami, sliced a 1/2 lb and took it in his office, where he began eating it without paying for it ). Once you get 3 or more documented incidents, call in the Regional LP and let the manager squirm.....

  19. Lori should bring Rich back to club 13 and put Mike back in Deptford where he can just sit in his office all day, and do nothing like he does in Maple Shade

  20. I know an OPS that doctored paperwork, and all the GM cared about was passing audits....this same OPS, driving a forklift, ripped steel from the floor.... this same OPS, when confronted with a sexual harassment issue, tried to pass off the incident as " perhaps people do not like her appearance "... this lesbian employee was trying to get other females to " join in " with her and her partner, and had pictures showing their behavior..... this same OPS NEVER worked overnights, yet got to the OPS position... Wonder what she had on somebody.....

  21. Club 13 needs a GM that has a back bone and that will jump in and get the job done and not just be barking out orders and making some managers feel inadequate that they don't know what there doing.Because the real truth, he don't have a clue what the hell he's doing.and if it weren't Cory being there and knowing what has to be done and is always doing something and not hanging in his office. and yet he has the audacity to be bad mouthing him, that shows me what kind of GM we do have. Club 13 doesn't need that kind of GM...NOW DO WE

  22. BRING BACK GEORGE ULSH !!!!!!!!!
Since George " left ", all that has been at # 13 is finger pointing, useless managers

  23. mike waters is the best gm club 013 ever had and cory can learn from mike if he worked as a team player

    ReplyDelete
  24. Mike Waters "ROCKS"! Its nice to be able to work as a team. It was so unorganized before that. TEAM-WORK gets it done! No one person can run a store that big. Stop complaining and start working with the team instead of against it. Lets see cory do it all by himself if you think hes that awesome. Good job Mike!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. George Ulsh WAS THE BEST !!!!!

#13 at one time had the best team.... George, Gladys, Brian, Curtis, Mike, Lori, Maribeth, Felix and Mario on the days Cory, Rich and Eber on the overnights. George would come in early and help pack out, boom up merchandise, etc. This crew of managers knew TEAMWORK !!!!!

Cory has come a long way since starting as a ticketer. Still a little immature at times, but he gets the job done to company standards.

  26. Favoritism is at ALL clubs.
Managers disliking each other is at all clubs.
Stupid write ups occur at all clubs.
    Threats occur at all clubs.
As long as the club is running and doing OK, an investigation will NEVER occur.

  27. "George, Gladys, Brian, Curtis, Mike, Lori, Maribeth, Felix and Mario on the days Cory, Rich and Eber on the overnights"

That's the All-Star lineup of the special olympic retail team.
    1. George is long gone.
    2. Gladys works 6 months a year.
    3. Brian, who cares.
    4. Curtis is a good guy, but that aint enough.
    5. Mike, another, who cares.
    6. Lori loves to work under the table.
    7. Maribeth was cool!!!
    8. Felix was coo, and they did him dirty. And his son has a big forehead.
    9. Mario is cool, and he is the man. Good to have him back.
    10. Gotta love the 3 stooges overnight mgr team.

  33. I do like and respect Mario. He always gets the job done. He can ruffle some feathers, but his techniques have proven effective. He has a great work ethic and vision that other managers should envy.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Mario is an excellent Sr. Merchandise Manager.

Envy can also derive from a sense of low self-esteem that results from an upward social comparison threatening a person's self image: another person has something that the envier considers to be important to have

    Actually, YOU envy Mario

    ReplyDelete
  35. I do not emvy anyone who works for BJ's, whether it be management or hourly.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Speaking of Mario, he was helping out at #156 the other day in preparation to the club's inventory. Good to see him once again.

  38. As a former BJ'S manager,
it seems that you are a disgruntled employee.

    1. How would a customer know that managers cant give you anything they promise, or can't keep a deal, unless you were an employee.

    2. You must be psychic frequent shopper to be able to read the minds of scheming employees.

So if the job makes you so unhappy, find different employment. However, learn punctuation and proper sentence structure before filling out an application, or writing a resume.
