BJ's to report Second Quarter Earnings Wednesday

Welcome to the recessionImage by djlah via Flickr

The New York Times previews BJ's Wholesale Club's second quarter earnings, after J.P. Morgan downgraded the stock yesterday. Earnings aren't expected to be too strong, we've heard that the mood has been a little tense in the stores because of this.

  2. Maybe they would have better sales if they stopped cutting payroll, having enough night crew to stock the clubs, and more importantly enough cashiers.
Then maybe they can work on management teams that are not producing and start promoting from within instead of hiring off the street.

  3. Stop complaining about cutting payroll, it goes up and down every year and it is always the same relative to club sales and the age of the club. If payroll was constantly decreasing it would be at $0 by now.

  4. As # 4 said, payroll is based on sales. More sales, more help.

Try working overnights, it will make you realize how good you have it....

As long as the managers hit audit numbers, there will be no true changes in your management team.

I know of a manager who is not very good, yet has scored 100% on the past 4 audits. Do you think this person is going anywhere? The answer is NO because of the audit scores.

  5. To the idiots that think it is all about sales - You guys must pay absolutely no attention to the company that you work for! Yes, sales are extremly important but without our members we will not have any sales! Payroll is based off a combination of MFI (membership fee income) and sales. So I suggest we make our clubs a more pleasurable easy place for our members to shop, and we might see our payroll increase. This means FLS's don't hang around at the podium getting mad when self checkouts flash or a cashier needs you, its not the cashier but the member that needs your assistance, I am quite sure that the cashier would not call you if they didn't have to, seeing how some of you guys act! If an MOD is paged to Member services dont call the desk team back and ask "what they want", again it is not the team member that needs you but the member! The new program OTO (own the outcome) that came down from HO is a GREAT idea, we are in business for the Members not ourselves and until you guys realize that without our members your paycheck is not possible you will not see an increase in any of our clubs payroll! So stop the whining about not having any hours and just do what you were hired to do!

  6. So what you are saying is a person who opened a membership in Florida, but renews in New Jersey, the NJ store gets the MFI ( Membership Fee Income ) and the store in Florida gets less cashiers ??????

  7. Nice responses from the Home office about hours. Its obvious you dontw ork at club level if you think the payroll is sufficent. Some clubs do get the payroll they need, most do not. Thats a simple fact. If you do not have the hours available for replenishment, cashiers, etc, you will not have sales.
Payroll is the number one expense HO can control, but running clubs on skeleton crews is no way to positivly increase the bottom line.
This company has to decide what it wants to be. Dose it want to be a warehouse club, a grocery store or a dept store. It sufferes from a Identity crisis, as seen by the many new programs that get implimented and then pushed to the side when a new idea hits them. So far, they have failed to really stick with any program long enough to actually see them through to the end.

  8. BJ's does not need sales in order to make money, they need new members to sign up and they need to keep their existing members. Having merchandise for them to buy is a great way to keep them renewing, nice and helpful team members is another good one.

The amount of profit that BJ's makes is less than the amount they take in from membership fees. If you lose a member you lose 45$, if that member just buys less then you only lose the margin on the merchandise.

How much more payroll wold you like? How much have sales gone down since "payroll has been cut"?

  14. The club that i work at brings in a good amount of funds. Higher than the smaller clubs; so why is it that the smaller clubs get a better payroll then us.... Payroll sux big time. And should cashiers but their butt getting memebership renewals when they are the ones who usually have the least stay at bjs. Why should hourly's paved a way for salary workers?? explain that.

  19. I manager, I no education to be one but still I manager, I ask how high when told to jump, I think of I, I learn from other I managers. I never plan, I do. BJ's suffers from stone age management. I never wrong, I always right.
You hourly, you work for me, you bite tongue when I think of me. If I wrong I don't admit I put you in place. I panic when you have good idea, I break company policy, no one care as long as I do. You almost manager, but I manager and I can do and say what ever I want to you but I use bobblehead technique with my Sr. manager therefore I rule. I treat you like shit because I have power and you don't. You too stupid to get union to check my power. I call you piece of shit behind your back, I manager I better than you. Life sucks for you, it sucks for me too.

I am not proud of being manager at BJ's I just need the cash.
